The St. Charles City Council convened on July 19, 2022, to appoint a new Ward One Alderperson, approve key board appointments, authorize agreements, and support local arts and mental health initiatives. The meeting combined critical governance decisions with community engagement updates.

Appointment of Bill Calamaris as Ward One Alderperson

The Council addressed the most prominent item: the appointment of Bill Calamaris to serve as Ward One Alderperson until April 30, 2023.

The discussion was contentious, with Aldermen Waterball and Lencioni criticizing the appointment process for:

  • Lack of transparency in notifying residents about the vacancy

  • Limited solicitation of candidates

  • Concerns over diversity, particularly the underrepresentation of women in recent mayoral appointments

The Mayor defended her process, stating she followed city procedures and selected Calamaris based on his experience and skill set. After debate, the appointment was approved, and Bill Calamaris was officially sworn in by Chief Judge Clint Holt.

Board Appointments and Agreements

The Council also approved several key appointments and agreements:

  • Wedge Lantabee appointed to the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners

  • Susie Remax appointed to the Cultural Commission

  • Authorization of an agreement between the City of St. Charles and IBW 196

  • Funding allocation for the St. Charles 708 Mental Health Board for fiscal year 2022-2023

These approvals ensure continuity in governance, support for public safety oversight, cultural programming, and mental health services in the community.

Community Spotlight: "Paint the Riverside" Event

During the public comment period, a representative from the St. Charles Arts Council highlighted the upcoming "Paint the Riverside" event scheduled for July 30, 2022.

The event will partner with Earthpaint.org, a non-profit organization that:

  • Recycles paint for community use

  • Provides employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities

This initiative reflects the Council’s ongoing support for inclusive community arts programs and environmentally conscious projects.

Conclusion

The July 19 meeting illustrated the City Council’s dual focus on effective governance and community enrichment.

From approving Bill Calamaris as Ward One Alderperson to supporting arts and mental health programs, the Council continues to balance policy decisions with initiatives that enhance local engagement. The discussion surrounding diversity and transparency also underscores the community’s active participation in municipal decision-making.
