Thorton’s Gas Station Receives Liquor License

  • The license permits off-premise package liquor sales from 7 AM to midnight.

  • All Basset training and insurance requirements are in place.

  • The application was unanimously approved following the Liquor Control Commission’s recommendation.

Maple Leaf Coffee House Adds Event Space Liquor Option

The new Maple Leaf Coffee House at 1 West Illinois Street, Suite 180, secured a D9 liquor license to allow alcohol at private events.

  • The license enables renters to bring their own alcohol (BYOB) for events.

  • Only Basset-trained staff or licensed caterers will serve alcohol.

  • The committee approved the application unanimously.

Domo Sushi Approved for B1 Liquor License

Domo Sushi, an all-you-can-eat sushi restaurant opening at 1890 West Main Street, was approved for a B1 liquor license.

  • The restaurant is moving into the former Throwbacks location.

  • A past alcohol violation at another location was discussed but deemed isolated.

  • While the restaurant aims to open March 1, the liquor license will be issued later.

City Adds $1.355 Million to Pension Funds

The committee approved a budget revision to allocate an additional $1.355 million to Police and Fire Pension funds:

  • $883,000 for Police and $472,000 for Fire.

  • This funding move is designed to reduce tax levy pressure and support the city’s goal of 100% pension funding by 2040.

  • City staff will review pension contributions annually based on fiscal performance.

Conclusion: Supporting Businesses and Financial Stability

The February 28 meeting highlighted the city’s efforts to support local business growth while ensuring long-term financial stability. Approving liquor licenses for new and expanding businesses encourages economic activity, while the additional pension funding demonstrates a strong commitment to fiscal responsibility and employee security.
